Kudos to Sheffield residents who have continued their impressive commitments to recycling, reusing, and repurposing items to keep it all out of landfills!
I applaud everyone who is part of Sheffield’s collective commitment to recycling and reuse. In doing so, money is saved, jobs are supported, and our solid-waste footprint is hopefully reduced as smart environmental choices are made daily. These actions and decisions become more important each year, as Massachusetts landfills are scheduled to close in 2030.
Sheffield offers a wide assortment of programs, all of which have been well received:
- A Bulky Waste bin is available every day the Transfer Station is open.
- A mattress recycling bin is available the first Sunday of each month.
- Textile recycling, recovery, reuse collection boxes are next to the Swap Shop, by Town Hall, and at the Senior Center where donations of new, used, or past-their-prime clothing, textiles, shoes, accessories, etc. find new uses as Apparel Impact processes these donations. Items just need to be clean, dry, and odor and mold free and in plastic or paper bags, which are also recycled.
- The annual home compost bin program is available in May.
- Expanded electronics, battery, and mercury goods recycling/reuse programs.
- White goods, Bulky Rigid Plastic, and String lights recycling.
- Swap Shop for usable goods looking for a new home.
- Food waste collection which is turned into compost.
