Enough fighting. Lighten up

In her letter, Rita Kasy writes: “How about thinking in terms of “supporting” instead of fighting and struggling?"

To the Editor:

Is it just my imagination or has the word “fight” gone viral? I am so tired of hearing about “fights”! It’s always a Fight for a cause, or a Fight for a political view, or a Fight for a disease, or a Fight for a law or a Fight for parking space! It’s exhausting to be fighting all the time. And it’s a heavy burden to be fighting all the time.

Then of course there’s the Struggle. Seems if we’re not Fighting then we’re Struggling. How about thinking in terms of “supporting” instead of fighting and struggling? Let’s change our attitudes and our terminology a little bit and lighten up. This is not to say there aren’t things worth “fighting” for. Indeed there are. But if we re-frame how to look at these “fights” and approach them with a little less fervor and a lot more intelligence, critical planning and a dose of sensitivity, maybe we’ll all be a lot calmer.

Patriotism should unite us, not divide us

A nation’s 250th birthday belongs to every citizen—not to one political party or a single administration. By turning a nonpartisan anniversary into a spectacle marked by political litmus tests, organizers have alienated those who expected a true celebration of national pride.
