POEM: ‘Delivery Boy’

A meditation, upon hearing that the singer Nick Cave's 15-year-old son, Arthur, died from a fall from a cliff in Brighton, England.

Delivery Boy

(4 Nick Cave)

You reek of cigarettes.

Babe. They been shooting at me again.

I don’t care what they been doing again.

Babe. I’ve already showered once. Before I went to the grocery store. Look. I remembered your Cheerios and organic yogurt. And the seafood gumbo is just how you like it.

Without the shrimp?

Yes. Without the shrimp.

Did you save the receipt?

Babe.

You’re sweating again.

Babe. I just rode four miles on my bicycle.

At this ungodly hour I don’t know why you can’t take a taxi like every other civilized human being.

Why do you always say that? Why do always equate god with civilization? Do you know how many rides that is? Do you know what seven times twelve equals?

What are you talking about?

Seven times every day for the past seven months equals?

Whatever. Don’t forget to lock your bike.

Babe. Why would I forget such a minor detail?

No babe about it. Hurry up. There’s bugs out here.

There’s always bugs out here. We don’t have no bugs in the Quarters.

Sure you do.

Nope. They spray all the time.

They spray all the time up here.

Well how come you have so many bugs?

Quit your smart ass. And take those clothes off.

Babe. I almost popped another tire because of the pot holes.

You should get some lights.

Got a near miss at Esplanade and Ramone. Yet another drunk driver riding the red light.

I told you to wear that reflective helmet.

Are you kidding? Then I’m easy pickings for those kids outside Jefferson High school.

Those kids shoot at you all the time. You know they’re only trying to scare you.

Well it’s working.

No. You don’t wear that helmet because my mother gave it to you.

Here we go. Always back to your mother and that helmet.

Don’t raise your voice. There’s two of us now.

Two of us? What about the third?

Are you the one pregnant?

No. But honey.

No buts about it. Are you coming in or what?
