To the editor:
On February 27, over 100,000 Michigan Democrats protested the Biden administration’s unabashed verbal and material support of Israel’s genocide in Gaza by voting “Uncommitted” in their primary. They answered a deep moral call to spotlight the ongoing massacre and starvation of Gazans being committed with our tax dollars. Over 30,000 men, women, and children dead, a toll certain to climb massively. Their protest came from dismayed and disgusted Arab Americans and Muslim Americans, but also from kindred marginalized American communities; clear-sighted youth; and, yes, Jewish Americans (like me) saying, “Never again means never again for anyone.” As recent U.S. polls are showing, there is broad and growing consensus that a permanent ceasefire must happen immediately. But as the International Court of Justice digests the overwhelming evidence that Israel is guilty of genocide, the Biden administration and the U.S. remain complicit with and continues to fund their actions.
So what can you do? You can call your legislators and tell them to support an immediate and permanent ceasefire. You can stand out in protest, such as at the solidarity gathering Sunday March 3, at Park Square in Pittsfield. And you can reinforce the message of Michiganders to Biden by voting “No Preference” in the Massachusetts primary on Super Tuesday. How many more innocent families will die? Our community must stand up in opposition.
